Correspondence (10 letters), Jan. 7, 1852-Sept. 18, 1865, from Latimer, Stockton (Calif.), to his family and friends, describing his stop in Cuba, living conditions in Calif., farming, the weather, gold mining in the mountains, and people leaving for Australia. Also included is correspondence (eight letters), 1856-1865, from Josiah Gorham, Stockton (Calif.), to Latimer, describing the growth of Stockton, building of roads and railroads, vigilantes in San Francisco, a flood in 1862, and thousands of cattle dying due to a drought in 1864. A farewell poem to a Miss Thompson, undated, is also included.
